Music Campaign
This project was a mock music campaign centered around a redesign of the 1960s band The Kinks’ song “Waterloo Sunset.” The window imagery is inspired by a line in the song that allowed for sunset-inspired views.
Tools Used: Screenprinting, Photoshop, Illustrator, InDesign
Course: Images in Communication, The University of Texas at Austin
Deliverables: Album cover, Lyric booklet, Record label, Album jacket, Backstage pass, Commemorative tickets, Poster, and Spotify mockup
The Vision
“Waterloo Sunset” by The Kinks is one of my favorite songs of all time. This song is extremely calming to me, and I have so many great memories associated with this song. I had thought the album that contains the song was called Waterloo Sunset, but later I realized it was actually titled Something Else. I then created a list of songs to be included in a fake EP entitled Waterloo Sunset for the music campaign.
Before I started making anything, I created an Illustrator file where I could plan out all of the designs. This Illustrator file acted as a home base. I created everything I would need for the project in this document and would then copy and paste each asset.
I drew my inspiration from a quote in the song: Everyday I look at the world from my window, but chilly, chilly is the evening time. Waterloo sunset’s fine.
The Process
My goal with screenprinting was to make the window panels look more like stained glass. To get this effect, instead of flooding my screen with a solid color, I drizzled various colors to create a marbling effect.
I wanted to keep the album cover simple and only include the main icon. I really enjoy it when albums are fairly simple and are less text-based, so I wanted to try and emulate that. I scanned my prints and picked which one I thought best fit the overall vibe. I chose a print where the registration is slightly off, creating a more casual feeling.
While I was creating the main assets for this project, I also made some smaller assets that take elements of the main design. I then used those smaller designs to create the tickets. For the backstage pass, I really wanted the shape to resemble the shape of the main window design.
The label might have been my favorite deliverable to make. First, I measured out how big I needed the label to be and then set up a guide in Illustrator. I used one of my smaller assets to be the background and then had fun playing with the type.
